APO Summer Workshop

Where: Reading Blue Coat School, Sonning, Berkshire – RG4 6SU
In August 2014 APO are again running a Summer Workshop, to work informally on a piece we wouldn’t normally have time to prepare for a concert in our normal rehearsal time. This year the piece we will be working on will be Strauss’ “Tod und Verklärung” (Death and Transfiguration). We will spend time on this piece in both full orchestra sessions, and sectional rehearsals with professional tutors helping each section to get the most out of the piece, and help to improve our performances.
The workshop will cost £20 per person to cover the cost of music hire, activities, refreshments etc. You will need to bring a packed lunch with you as lunch is not provided, but tea/coffee/cold drinks will be provided throughout the day.
In the wind and brass we currently have space for a clarinet, 2 trumpets, 2 trombones, as well as 2 percussionists (1 timps, 1 other) and all string players.

We will also be running small chamber music groups on Sunday, for any players who are around and wish to participate. Please Contact Us if you’d like to be involved in that as well.
Ian Stewart – Brass Tutor
Ian Stewart began playing trombone at school when he was 11. He joined West Wycombe Band and the Oxford and District Youth Band. He was also a member of the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain. In 1971 he was awarded a 2 year Junior Exhibitioner scholarship at the Royal Academy of Music.
After school, Ian spent 22 years in the army music service, first as a bandsman in the 2nd Battalion, the Royal Green Jackets. In 1985, he completed the army bandmaster’s course and was appointed Bandmaster to the Queen’s Own Hussars. His final appointment was as School Bandmaster at Kneller Hall, the home of the British Army School of Music.
Ian became Musical Director of LGB Brass in 1999. He has generously shared with us his enthusiasm and talent for brass music and the band has gone from strength to strength.
Thanks to Ian, LGB Brass has celebrated competition success and become a professional presence on the bandstand. He conducted the band on concert tours to France, Germany and Hungary and achieved a double win at the Autumn SCABA contest in 2004. In 2006, Ian took the band to 2nd place at the Southern Counties Regional competition. This was our first attempt at a competition at this level and meant we qualified for the National Brass Band Finals at Harrogate in September. From there on in, the band entered something of a golden age under Ian’s leadership – qualifying for the National Brass Band Finals (now relocated to Cheltenham) three times in four years (2010 and 2011 – 4th section) and 2013 (3rd section). The band’s recent success reached a pinnacle on 22nd September 2013 when LGB Brass were crowned Third Section National Champions of Great Britain.
Ian continues to play trombone, currently with the championship section band, Friary Guildford. In addition he regularly deputises for local orchestras, such as, Sussex Symphony Orchestra, Horsham Symphony Orchestra and the Mid Sussex Symphonia, as well as brass ensembles whenever time permits.
